The 3 things to do after choosing
Harleysville as your workers comp carrier
1. Designate an injury coordinator and
stress prompt reporting of job-related
injuries
- Name
the individuals (primary and backup) your employees should contact
as soon as an injury occurs.
- If
you have multiple locations, consider naming individuals for each
location.
- Make
sure all injury coordinators know how to report
a job-related injury, and that they’re trained to do so
within 24 hours.
|
 |
|
2.
Create your company's medical provider panel |
- Print out these
step-by-step
instructions for selecting a group of physicians and other
healthcare providers from those available on the website of CorVel®
Corporation, Harleysville’s approved managed care medical partner for
workers compensation claims.
- When ready to create your company’s panel, visit the
CorVel site at www.corvel.com and
choose the providers, across all medical disciplines, your employees
will rely on for treatment in the event of a job-related injury.
|
 |
- If you have multiple locations, follow the same process to
create a panel of providers for each location.
|
|
3. Tell your employees what to do in the
event of a job-related injury |
- On your company’s bulletin boards, post:
|
-
Your medical panel document, which, if required by law,
will include your state’s specific wording for your “Notice to
Employees.” (You can download the document from the CorVel site once
you’ve created your panel.)
-
Posters, like the one shown to the right, listing the
names of your injury coordinators.
You can order these in quantity from your Harleysville agent.
|
- Brief employees about their workers compensation benefits,
what to do in the event of a job-related injury, and about the
importance of reporting such injuries within 24 hours, using one or more
of the following as a starting point for your communication:
|
|
 |
-
Staff meetings—Regular meetings help reinforce the right
behaviors.
-
E-mail messages—If e-mail is part of your company’s
culture, regular electronic reminders of your workers compensation
program can help to bridge communications gaps.
-
Company newsletters—If your company has one, articles
spotlighting injury-related procedures and guidelines can plant the seed
for taking the appropriate action when a job-related injury eventually
occurs.

Steps toward
containing workers comp-related costs
Things every employer
can do to help prevent job-related injuries—Adopt a safety
attitude. Identify safety hazards. Establish and enforce safety
standards. Set up a health and safety committee. Establish a
recordkeeping system for all job-related injuries. Form first aid agency
response teams. Educate employees about safety.
Loss
prevention—the ultimate tool for avoiding job-related injuries
As noted above, containing workers comp costs
starts with providing a safe working environment for your employees. And
most often, this is achieved through an effective loss prevention program,
which requires:
- Support and commitment from your company’s top
management
- Training and education of employees and supervisors
- Accident investigations and analyses
- Self inspections
