Its easy to make your home
injury-proof!
Maybe the phrase "Home Sweet Home" should be changed to "Home Safe
Home," because it isnt so "sweet" if someone gets hurt there. Many
things in your house can seem harmless enough, but can actually be quite dangerous. And
these dangers can make you liable if a visitor is injured.
There are many ways to make each room in your home safer. The following safety
checklist can help start you on your way to making your home "injury-proof."
Overall
- Keep stairs, hallways, sidewalks, porches and other walkways well lit.
- Use the shortest extension cords possible and never run them under carpeting.
- Make sure carpets, tiles and other floor coverings are secure to prevent tripping.
- Never smoke in bed or anywhere else you might fall asleep.
- Never smoke or light matches near combustible materials or flammable liquids.
- Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors your home and test them every month.
- Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, basement and your bedroom. Recharge them
promptly after use.
In the kitchen
- Keep poisonous materials locked away and out of childrens reach.
- Store knives and other sharp objects in appropriate containers.
- Wipe up spills immediately.
In the bathroom
- Place non-skid mats in tubs and showers to prevent slips and falls.
- Keep shampoo and other toiletries in cabinets where they cant be knocked over.
In the basement
- Tag all gas and water lines for easy identification during emergencies.
- Label fuses and circuit breakers so you know which circuits they protect.
- Keep cleaning fluids, insecticides and other hazardous materials well out of the reach
of children.
Remember, the time to make your home injury-proof is before anyone gets hurtnot
after!
