What you should do to prepare your home for vacation

In advance:

  • Make sure car insurance is paid and adequate for other states, Canada or Mexico, depending on your travel plans. If renting a car, check with your insurance agent to see if you should purchase the collision damage waiver for the rental car.

  • Double-check life, health and homeowners insurance coverages.

  • Write down insurance policy numbers and agent’s telephone number, and take them with you.

  • Have car checked and tuned up one week before departure.

  • Make hotel reservations.

  • Obtain traveler’s checks, passports, visas, etc.

  • Inform police of travel plans if you will be away for an extended period of time.

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your house while you’re gone, or arrange for a house sitter.

  • Stop newspaper delivery and have the post office hold your mail, or ask a friend to collect it every day for you.

  • Have someone mow your lawn and water your plants.

  • Make arrangements to board pets or leave them with a friend.

  • Remove valuables from home and store in a safe deposit box.

  • Prepare a first aid kit to include soap, hydrogen peroxide, bandages, butterfly bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, ace bandage, scissors, tweezers, thermometer, aspirin, sunscreens and insect repellent.

Immediately before departure:

  • Use timers to turn lights and radio on and off at appropriate times, day and night. Tuning in a "talk" station helps give the impression that you are at home.

  • Leave shades, blinds and drapes in normal positions.

  • Turn down water heater to lowest or pilot setting.

  • Turn off gas or electric for appliances that won’t be needed while you’re away.

  • Turn off water for washer and dishwasher.

  • Turn telephone bell down or off completely.

  • Make sure the message on your answering machine does not indicate that you are on vacation.
  • Remove items from porch and lawn.

  • Move valuables so they can’t be seen from porch windows.

  • Lock all doors and windows, paying particular attention to the basement, garage, attic and sliding glass doors.

  • Leave a second car in the driveway to give the impression that you are home.
