Harleysville Mutual elects directorHARLEYSVILLE, PA June 8, 1999 William W. Scranton III has been elected to the board of directors of Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company, a property/casualty insurance company headquartered in Harleysville, Pa."Bills business experience and civic involvement make him a great addition to our board," explains Walter R. Bateman, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harleysville Mutual. "In addition to serving Pennsylvania as lieutenant governor and his continuing active involvement in civic initiatives, he has operated three direct marketing research firms, a management firm and a publishing business. Were very fortunate to have a business person of Bills caliber on our board." Scranton is currently with the Scranton Family Office, Scranton, Pa., a family office managing investments and civic initiatives. Previously, he served as the president of The Worthington Tuthill Co., a direct marketing mail order company, and Fortunes Inc., a direct marketer of general merchandise, both in San Francisco, Calif. He was lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1987 and ran as the Republican candidate for governor in 1986. Scranton also served as a commissioner for the PA 21st Century Environment Commission. He is also on the board of the Allied Services Foundation and Rehabilitation Hospital, The Scranton Cultural Center, The Countryside Conservancy, and The Summit Partnership, Inc., among others. He also served as the chairman of the governors committee to investigate the consequences of Three Mile Island. Scranton holds a bachelors degree from Yale University, New Haven, Conn.
