A focus on investors and shareholders
Marking a milestone in its history, Harleysville became a public company in 1986 after the successful public sale of 2,156,250 shares of Harleysville Group Inc. common stock. "Going public" was a major step toward securing the capital necessary to expand the company's operations over time.
On May 1, 2012, Nationwide acquired all of the outstanding publicly held shares of Harleysville Group common stock. Harleysville Group and its subsidiaries now are wholly owned by Nationwide.
A focus on the communities we serve
Harleysville employees are good corporate citizens who get involved to improve the communities we live in—and industry in which we work.
Both industry and community service is highly encouraged, as reflected by the number of employees involved on insurance industry association boards and committees, our longstanding reputation for providing leadership on industry issues, the agenda of Harleysville’s "" (a volunteer-based organization that serves hundreds of disadvantaged people every year), and support for the United Way and other charitable organizations.
Fun fact: Our efforts to spread goodwill throughout our organization and surrounding communities are epitomized by the universally famous "Smilie Button," which was actually invented by the Harleysville Worcester Insurance Company in 1965. One agent described the button as "the company’s mission statement."
